Not in a rush to raise: first, build a company that is ready
Why I have not rushed to close any investment, and instead spent the time getting HOPE ready, with real results and a disciplined management system.
After I shared my shift to a "capital mechanism" mindset, many people asked: so are you going out to raise money now, and what have you prepared? My answer may surprise some of them. I am not in a hurry to close any investment. What I am doing is getting the company into a state of readiness.
Over two years of operations, and the people who guided me
This journey did not begin yesterday. It is more than two years of running the business myself and tasting the bitter and the sweet of the market. I remain grateful to my first mentor, an older colleague who guided my earliest steps and gave me the foundation of thinking I still build on. Back then I also studied the elevator pitch and the pitch deck, made slides, and worked through the numbers carefully.
But to be honest, those numbers still lived on paper. They were plans and assumptions that had not been fully tested, so even after finishing I felt uneasy and not fully confident.
What is different now: real results
Working with Mr. Hải H Nguyễn (Forbes Under 30 Asia 2017, Founder and Fundraising Coach at BeginGuru) to restructure HOPE CORP, I can see the difference clearly. What I bring to the table today is no longer a projection. It is the actual result of more than two years of operations:
- How do customers respond?
- How is the product performing in the market?
- Has the operating model been optimized?
The pitch deck is no longer a request for money. It is a report of results, carrying the weight of real traction, and far more credible than the polished plans of the past.
Redrawing the map with an expert
I am learning from Hải to redraw HOPE's pitch deck entirely. The work is not finished, because this stage means tearing down and rebuilding the management thinking that sits inside the deck. I no longer present HOPE as a company that simply sells products, but as a complete picture of a health and education ecosystem.
Why do this: a mindset of readiness
My purpose right now is not necessarily to close an investment immediately. I want to find the right partners, people who share the same values about building a business with integrity. More importantly, I want the company to be ready: a disciplined and transparent management system and a sharp strategy.
What for? So that when we need resources to expand, we can start the fundraising process right away rather than preparing from zero. That is how an owner thinks: do not wait until you are thirsty to dig the well. Build the reservoir while the sun is still shining.
